Lee Westwood confident of regaining his number one ranking – PGA Tour Update
The Honda Classic tees off today in Florida with world number two Lee Westwood of England hoping to regain his top world ranking from fellow Ryder Cup team-mate Martin Kaymer. The Englishman, last week lost his second round match against Nick Watney in the
Accenture Match Play Championships, as he was not looking in the best of form before the tournament commenced.
With current world number one Kaymer not playing in this tournament, Westwood now has an opportunity in this event by only finishing among the top three on the leader board after the tournament ends on Sunday. The European Tour member is very confident that
he will capture the honourable title of becoming the best golfer in the world on the rankings.
Westwood in his interview after playing the practice round of the Honda Classic said, "I'm hitting the ball well and my swing is in complete momentum. The condition of the course is very tough and it will surely be challenging for all the golfers on the
field to produce some under par rounds."
The former world number one has played four tournaments this year, but still has to make it among the top ten. He also failed to make it through to the final last week at the Match Play, where he was the top seeded player. It was seen during his practice
round that his crisp iron shots were favouring him and he was putting well on the fast greens.
As for the current world number one Kaymer, he is taking time out in this tournament and practicing hard for next week’s WGC-Cadillac Championships. Along with the German, Tiger Woods is not playing in this tournament, as he is looking forward to improve
his performance in the Match Play format.
The English golfer, Westwood, is not concerned about gaining the number one spot and is focusing to mark his third Professional Golfer’s Association Tour win. He won a tournament last year in June where he had to face Robert Karlsson and Robert Garrigus
in a play-off as their scores were the level. Since then, he has not performed exceedingly well according to his standards.
Lee thinks that Kaymer will have to live up to the task of his number one spot, as much is expected from him. Kaymer, who is still in his early career, needs to win more on the tour playing so that he can retain his top position for a long time.
Englishman, Luke Donald’s victory in last week’s tournament was a much awaited win since he last won here at the Honda Classic in 2006. Donald is also ready to continue his winning form in this tournament. He also managed to jump to the number three spot
in the world golf rankings.
Last year’s U.S. Open Champion Graeme McDowell and his compatriot Rory McIlroy will also be among the contenders of the tournament. McIlroy recently commented about Woods on a website that he will not make a come-back again in the golfing arena.
Westwood is very positive that he will lift the title this week to retain his rankings which he lost a few days ago.
