Lee Westwood decides to consult Psychiatrist to help bring an end to his major drought
World number two Lee Westwood, in a surprise move, has decided to consult a sports psychiatrist in order to break the major taboo he has been patiently facing for almost a decade. Westwood has already undergone the first session at the mind wizard Bob Rotella,
who has been a personal psychiatrist of both Darren Clarke and Rory McIlroy.
The 38-year-old’s surprise move has stunned most of the critics as Westwood had stated himself on several occasions that he will never consult a psychiatrist over his sporting issues.
"I've never felt like I've needed a sports psychologist," he said, almost exactly two years ago this week. "I've always felt quite mentally stable. No, look at them all. They all look a bit odd to me, like they're the ones who need to see somebody."
Now with his new approach to think out of the box in order to bring an end to his major drought, it also points towards a possible lack of concentration which might be hampering him in the final rounds. Westwood is approaching the crucial time in his career
where a couple of more years would probably see the best of him on the course. For Westwood, it is high time that the veteran would break the taboo and win a major event in the sport.
Westwood admitted that he had a chat with the legendary Rotella and felt they had certain things to be taken care of regarding Westwood’s lack of mental stability.
"No, I'd actually been thinking about it for a while," Westwood told The Independent at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational in Akron yesterday. "I was with Bob on Sunday in Britain. The last time I sat down with him was more than 10 years ago, when I had an
hour with him. Yeah, what he had to say was very interesting."
Rotella’s timely help after a mental melt down in the Masters this year, saw Mcilroy romped to the biggest victory in the US Open history where he took the better off the field by eight strokes. Mcilroy succumbed to the final round pressure in the Masters,
losing his four shot lead to terrible bogeys throughout the day.
Rotella helped Clarke post first major victory of his career in the Open Championship last month, guiding the Irishman from the brink of a total collapse to a celebrated winner. Rotella’s story, however, does not end here. He played a major role in grooming
Padraig Harrington to bag three major titles in the course of his career.
Westwood will now be heading into the WGC Bridgestone Invitational this week and would be later heading into the fourth and final major of the year, the PGA Championship in Atlanta. The Englishman remained world number one for 17 weeks before he was knocked
out by Martin Kaymer at the start of the season. Westwood regained the top slot after his consecutive victories on the Asian Tour turf but lost it again to his countryman Luke Donald.
Westwood, who was hoping to make his move in the Open Championship after his lackluster display in the US Open, surprisingly failed to make the cut alongside world number one Donald. He is often questioned about the reasons of his failures in the major events
although he has jotted amazing performances in the rest of the event all season.
The Englishman is among the few players in the world who have the ability to play and win all over the world and has several victories on the Asian Tour. He has time and again shown his fondness for the tropical Asian courses.
