Lee Westwood displays electrifying performance in the final round of Honda Classic – Golf News
The world number three English professional golfer, Lee Westwood, shot a second best round on Sunday to finish fourth in the Honda Classic, played at PGA National Champion Course, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, from March 1 to 4, 2012.
Westwood, who was seen struggling throughout the first three rounds of the event, seemed to be back into his form on the final day, carding seven-under par 63 to improve 23 places on the leaderboard.
The player kicked off the final round with one-under par overall score and birdied the very first hole, followed by a spectacular eagle on par-five third. He was four-under after finishing his front nine.
His back-nine witnessed his score go further low with three more birdies that all came through easy looking putts in the end.
According to Westwood, his superb performance came as a credit of his extra practice that he did on Saturday’s night.
“Did some good work on the putting green last night and got a bit of confidence up and made three putts outside, well, from about 30 feet, one from about 30 feet and a couple 25-footers,” Westwood said.
Tiger Woods, who finished his round with a spectacular birdie-eagle on the final two holes, had the best round on the final day, one shot better than Westwood.
With such an electrifying performance, Woods passed Westwood on the leaderboard and tied for the second spot with his compatriot, Tom Gillis, at 10-under par tournament.
Meanwhile, the overnight leader, Rory McIlroy, maintained his lead till the end of the final to register the fifth win of his career.
This victory also brought him the news of being the number one in the Official World Golf Rankings, replacing Luke Donald on the top position.
He became the 16th player in history to become the number one and the second youngest after Woods, who became world number one for the first time at the age of 21.
Westwood praised and applauded McIlroy surging to lead the OWGR.
“He's a very good player, very young, still learning, got most of the shots. I think he's got a fairly bright future,” he said.
Westwood, who was also in contention for the top world position, still has the chance to displace McIlroy with a win in the second World Golf Championship of the year, the Cadillac Championship, starting from March 8, at the Doral Golf Resort & Spa, Doral,
Florida, USA.
