Lee Westwood displays impressive scoring at the Shell Houston Open first round
Lee Westwood played an impressive game at the first round of the Shell Houston Open, finishing tied on the 10th position, at Redstone Golf Club Tournament Course in Humble, Texas.
The 38-year-old English professional golf player was tremendous during the PGA staged event, but he made less birdies compared to the two leaders, Carl Pettersson and Angel Cabrera.
The first round is not yet complete, due to the thunderstorm at mid day. Only 51 players were able to finish, whereas all the rest will play the remaining first round at 7:30 am on Friday.
Westwood scored 4-under 68 and successfully completed his game on Thursday. He carded five birdies and a bogey on the 4th hole.
He saved many bunkers, hurdles on the course and impressively made pars on most of the holes.
“I’m living up to my reputation as a ‘sand rat’ what with being so high up in saving par from bunkers,” Westwood said. “I played some nice trap shots today so that part of my game is in good order”.
He was happy to score better than other previous events. His strokes, putting and driving was tremendous. He felt happy for such an enormous scoring performance and a competitive game.
“I also had a lot of other short iron shots and it’s a nice feeling when you can walk up to short shots around the green thinking you can hole it like I nearly did at my 17th,” Westwood further said.
He added, “I had a nice lie down the slope at the next and left of the flag and nearly holed that from 20 feet. But overall I am still a little rusty after a few weeks off but in saying that I am pretty happy with a 68”.
Pettersson and Cabrera played better than the Englishman and shared the lead at day-end impressively.
Pettersson made eight birdies and a bogey. Whereas, Cabrera played a bogey-free round and scored seven birdies.
Their scores of the first round were 7-under 65. They were lucky to secure a lead before the thunderstorm halted the game.
Now, the changed weather conditions have made the course tougher and more competitive. Rain fall created the bunkers, greens and fairways unfavourable for the players.
Hence, all the remaining golfers will has to face rough and tough challenges from Friday onwards.
