Lee Westwood eager to defend his title at the Thailand Golf Championship
The former world number one Lee Westwood is set to defend his title at the Thailand Golf Championship, when he tees off this week at the Amata Spring Country Club in Bangkok.
The tournament, which is also known as regions premier tournament because of its strong field, will be played from December 6 to 9, 2012. The event will feature a total of 132 players from different parts of the world.
Last year, the Englishman posted a 22-under par tournament score, to clinch a sparkling seven-stroke victory over the Charl Schwartzel.
His performance also included a stunning 12-under par 60, which came in the opening round of the inaugural edition of the tournament.
“Yeah, lots of great memories. I supposed shooting 60 in the first round was fairly memorable and then following up with a 64 to lead by 11 after two rounds, I can’t think when that has ever happened,” said the Worksop, Nottinghamshire resident.
“I was thinking of a 57 since it’s soft out there and the greens are holding,” Westwood cheekily replied when asked if he was eyeing another 60. “I’ve only shot 60 once in my life. That was special. You need everything to go right most of the time. It’s
been done once and it can be done again”.
This week, he is confident to replicate his last year’s performance, in a bid to successfully defend his title in Thailand.
The 39-year-old is currently enjoying a decent run of form, having finished tied for the sixth position in his last start on the PGA Tour, the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions.
In addition to that, he also defended his title on the Asian Tour, by winning the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters presented by PNTS, for the second time in a row.
According to the golf commentators, Westwood certainly has the potential to defend his title, considering the fact that he did the same earlier this season.
Moreover, he holds a strong track record on the Asian Tour – he has won six Asian Tour events in his career so far. Therefore, he will be a man to beat at this week’s US$1 million tournament.
