Lee Westwood eager to make a strong run at the BMW PGA Championship – Golf News
Lee Westwood of England is eager to return to his winning form on the European Tour, as he enters this week’s BMW PGA Championship, a tournament where he holds a decent track record.
The former world number one, along with his family, relocated to the United States last year and is back to his home soil for the first time since October.
He now believes that his past record in the tournament will greatly help him in contending strongly this week – he has two runner-ups, along with seven top-10 finishes recorded to his name at the BMW PGA Championship.
“It’s my first time back in England since October, so it's nice to be back,” he said. “Nice to play a tournament in England - we don't get an opportunity very often, so I suppose it's nice in a way that the Flagship
Event of The European Tour is in England and back here at Wentworth.”
“Hopefully I’ll play well, carry on the form that I've got going and go one better than two years ago where I lost in the play-off,” added the 40-year-old Englishman. “I enjoy coming back to England and playing
in front of the home crowd.”
Apart from eying a strong finish this week, the 22-time European Tour winner has set his sights on securing his maiden major victory at next month’s US Open, the second major golf championship of the season.
The US Open Championship will be held at the Merion Golf Club, a course where Westwood still has to make his debut.
Despite the fact that Westwood does not have any experience at Merion, he expects to be among the strong contenders for a victory in the tournament because of the recent improvements he made in his short game.
Talking to the European Tour’s official website, he said that the flaws in his short game were the main reason behind his poor performances in the majors, in the past few years. However, continuous practice has
allowed him to move from the 190th position in scrambling to fifth, which is no doubt a great improvement by the Palm Beach Gardens resident.
