Lee Westwood excited to play Ryder Cup
A few weeks ago, there were major questions regarding European team member Lee Westwood. Many had asked whether Westwood would play in the Ryder Cup or not? Will Lee be fit for the Ryder cup after his injury? Will Lee’s game be good enough to help Europe
go for glory?
Answers to all the aforementioned questions have been answered in the positive by critics who believe that after passing his fitness test with no difficulty, Lee will be able to perform well at the Ryder Cup in England. The Ryder Cup is set to take place
at Celtic Manor in Wales from October 1-3.
“If we win back the Ryder Cup and you hear a loud noise, it will be falling off the wagon,” said Lee Westwood who is an asset for the European team. The whole team under the captaincy of Colin Montgomerie is very excited and passionate about bringing the
cup home once again. They were victorious in 2006 but the American team clinched the trophy in 2008.
Westwood, who is known for his love for alcohol, was determined to return as a fit golfer in quick time. Part of his therapy was to give up alcohol, which he obviously had a hard time doing. Lee was prohibited from alcohol during an intense training regime
which proved to be good for the golfer. This was because the excess fluid was not helping Lee reduce the swelling in his ankle which was caused by a torn muscle in the right calf. This injury flared up during the French Open in June and the Bridgestone Invitational
which was the last tournament he participated in before his rest and recovery period began.
His hard work and dedication to golf worked wonders when he played really well in Worksop last Thursday. Westwood was the centre of attention as he changed his shoes in the car park, lifted up his golf clubs from his jaguar and walked towards the first tee.
Playing after some time off, Westwood looked anxious.
Westwood played nine holes and even though he was somewhat rusty, he got six birdies and an eagle. Looking at the way he was handling himself, it surely was evident that his work with trainer Steve McGregor hasn’t gone in vain. With six weeks of patience
and anxiety, Westwood is back and he is definitely ready for the Ryder Cup.
Lee has also scheduled for four more rounds of golf this week. He is confidently waiting to play a crucial role in helping his teammates regain the Ryder Cup for Europe. Ranked number one in Europe and number three in the world, he came second at the Master’s
in April. Lee ended as runners up at St. Andrew’s in mid-July which proves that the golfer has a lot of experience.
Westwood has played the Ryder Cup on six occasions till date. His first time was in Valderrama, Spain in 1997. With a lot of Ryder Cup experience, some would say he is the most polished player on Monty’s team. Westwood thinks that Colin would be a brilliant
captain and that he has kept him up to date about what’s going on. Even though there were doubts about Westwood’s fitness, Montgomerie was confident that Lee wouldn’t let him down.
“He is a lot less moody at the Ryder Cup than he is at regular tournaments; he becomes a different person. Even when he was playing for all those years, he took the responsibility of the team on his shoulders,” Westwood informed about Montgomerie.
Prior to his injury, Lee was having an amazing year. He was playing so well that many thought that he was capable to replace Tiger Woods as the world number one golfer. Westwood has finished in the top three spots out of the last five majors that he has
played in.
His Ryder Cup performances to date are amazing. During one competition, Westwood won 16.5 points and has won against Tiger Woods on no less than five occasions. This was when he was paired with Nick Faldo. Westwood has shown some amazing golf when paired
with Faldo - he also does well with Sergio Garcia and Darren Clarke as his partners.
Being excited for the Ryder Cup is understandable. The enthusiasm is just a level higher for Lee Westwood due to his time away from golf for a while. After getting fit, Westwood will only be counting his days to tee off in Wales in a bid to gather glory
for Europe.
