Lee Westwood eyeing a successful defence of his title in the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters – Golf News
The world number three Lee Westwood headed to the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters with an aim to defend his title successfully, from April 19 to 22, 2012.
This is the same tournament that took him to the top of the Official World Golf Rankings last year, after recording a 19-under 269 winning score.
He is in a great shape to successfully defend the title at the Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio. Recently, he participated in the Masters Tournament and finished tied for the third position.
According to him, he could have easily earned the first major victory of his career if he had not missed several birdie chances during the event.
Westwood’s putting was below par and the longest putt that he made in the event came on the last hole in the final round from the distance of 10 feet.
However, his complete focus is now on the second edition of the Indonesian Masters, at the Royale Jakarta Golf Club.
A win in the event will also put him back on top of the world rankings. Alongside, it will provide him some momentum for the remaining major events of the year.
“Hopefully, yeah, I’m not far off [from No. 1] at the moment,” he said. “That’s obviously one of the goals of the year but the main goal is to play well in the remaining three major championships”.
Despite his great recent form, he believes that defending his title will be a tough job as it has always been a difficult task for each defending champion in every tournament.
“It is always special to come back here,” he said. “It is nice to come back and try to defend but I don’t think it will be easy. It is tough to win one and it is even tougher to defend”.
“I mastered the course last year and had the game plan right. All the players playing here wouldn’t be in this tournament if they weren’t capable of winning. No matter where you play in the world now it is difficult to win,” he added.
Rory Hie, the only Indonesian to make the cut last year, has opted out of the event in order to participate in the Volvo China Open.
The decision comes as a rather disappointment for the fans who were hoping to watch and back the local star playing in the event.
