Lee Westwood eyeing victory in the inaugural Indonesian Masters – Golf news
Lee Westwood is hoping to win the Masters before trying to clinch the inaugural $750,000 Indonesian Masters which is scheduled to take place from 21 – 24 April, 2011 in Jakarta.
The former world number one spoke to the press after compiling a 68 in the first round of the Shell Houston Open on Thursday.
He said, “Yes, the main goal for me is to win a major and then hopefully more. I am looking forward to it very much. I have been coming to play in Asia for many years now although I have only played in Indonesia once before. I'll be doing everything I can
to win.”
The Englishman overthrew world number one Tiger Woods in October 2010 but soon after, took a dip in rankings due to his poor performance. He failed to finish in top ten in all the season opener events and lost the form he had been carrying since the start
of the 2010 Ryder Cup.
Despite constant failures, the veteran has been adamant with his bid of lifting a major trophy in the current season. He highlighted his aim on Thursday evening and said that he was certain that he would fly to Jakarta as the Masters champion.
He also added that he was looking forward to playing in Indonesia and win. He reckoned the players in the Asian Tour and exclusively named Noh Seung-yul of Korea and Ryo Ishikawa of Japan as top competitors. He said that the Asian Tour had improved with
time and now it was the provider of some of the best golfers in the world. He also said that he knew he would face some tough challenge from the players of the region, but he was up for it.
He added, “I am sure I will face tough competition (at the Indonesian Masters). It's not easy to come and play in different places so I have to be in top form.”
Westwood’s first visit to the region was back in 2007 for the Indonesia President Invitational, where he finished third. This time, the Englishman is bidding for something big and it is nothing less than a trophy.
