Lee Westwood finishes strong at the Wells Fargo Championship – Golf News
Lee Westwood finished strongly at the Wells Fargo Championship with a six-under par 66 on Sunday, May 6, 2012 to tie for the fifth place on the leaderboard.
Westwood was one-under par on Friday evening while missing the cut exactly on the cutline. However, what he did after that, was amazing and watchful.
He carded a four-under par 68 in the third round, followed by a stunner in the final round at the Quail Hollow Golf Club.
Through eight holes on Sunday, he was six-under par with the help of four birdies and an eagle. On the 10th hole, he carded another birdie followed by the maiden bogey of the round on the 12th hole.
Despite an impressive performance in the final round, Westwood believes that he could have done even better if he had not missed some of the birdie putts.
“I could have been a couple better, maybe three, and given the leaders something really to think about,” Westwood said. “When I got up this morning I wasn’t really thinking about getting into contention as there were so many people between me and the lead
— not to mention nine shots. But at the turn I suddenly was in touch. I can’t be disappointed, though”.
He pointed out that after finishing the tournament on a high note, he is confident to maintain his ending momentum and taking it to the upcoming Players Championship.
However, he still needs to work on his putting, the similar problem that created problems for him in the Masters Tournament last month.
His longest putt of the tournament came from 15 feet. Yet, it was better than his previous performances in the recent tournaments.
Therefore, it seems that he has made some progress and a little extra effort will allow him to take the top positions in more tournaments.
“Of course it’s put me in good spirits for next week,” said Westwood. “I’m playing really solidly, but there is still a lot of improvement to be made in my putting”.
In the meantime, Rickie Fowler carded a birdie on the first extra hole in the playoffs to earn the first ever victory of his career while defeating Rory McIlroy and DA Points.
