Lee Westwood gains vengeance at Accenture Open
Lee Westwood might have been shaky at the Dubai Classic but, once at Accenture Match Play Championship, he was back in his usual form.
It was after the tournament in the Gulf when his coach Peter Cowan said, "If you want to improve, then you need to tackle your biggest weakness".
His key problem was that although he was able to fire birdies and eagles with complete efficiency, his performance collapsed when it came to chipping putts.
For such a player, survival definitely becomes a difficult task. However, Westwood was able to work on the advice in no time.
The results were simultaneously startling and immediate. More surprising was that the change came in an event in which his performance has consistently been poor.
Nevertheless, the English golfer was ready to sideline all of this. In his very opening encounter against Nicolas Colsaerts of Belgium and Swedish Robert Karlsson, he was able to secure an early lead in the event.
He was successfully able to maintain his consistency in his third match against Nick Watney.
After losing the first two holes to birdies, Nick was provided no opportunity to recover throughout the game.
Westwood was further able to stabilise his position in the game with the help of a birdie he made at the 10th hole. The shot came to be the final nail in Watney’s coffin.
It is important to mention here that in an event where champions like Luke Donald have not been able to maintain their nerve, Westwood improved his game when it was needed.
However, his current status in the event can be under threat from one player, Rory McIlroy. The Irish golfer has been performing exceptionally well to cruise into the third round of the championship.
According to pundits, the battle between these two players will definitely be a must watch.
The upcoming week of the event is being termed as highly crucial for Westwood, as he will be teeing it off against Scotsman Martin Laird.
He has recently defeated his opponent Paul Lawrie with a 3&1 score line and, hence, his threat on the golf course cannot be underestimated under any condition.
Along with this, Westwood will also have to devise a strategy to effectively weather Laird’s ability of hitting the balls miles away.
