Lee Westwood gets off to an unimpressive start at the 2012 Honda Classic – Golf News

Lee Westwood, who is among the favourites to win the Honda Classic, failed to impress his fans at the PGA National
Champion Course, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, in the opening round on Thursday, March 1, 2012.
He got off to a good start as he birdied the par-four second hole. However, he faltered on the sixth to finish with a double bogey, followed by six par shots until he made another birdie on par-four 13th.
He again made a birdie followed by a bogey on the 16th and 17th respectively, to finish level par 70 at the end.
It seemed as if Westwood was having trouble with his putting and missed some easy birdie putts that could have earned him an under-par score.
According to Westwood, he expected a better score when he made his opening birdie. However, the double bogey shattered his confidence, which in turn affected his overall performance in the initial stage of the tournament.
In the upcoming round, he is looking ahead to recording better performances and remaining in contention for the top position in the final round of the event.
Many golf experts believe that he is taking pressure of being the number one if he succeeds in registering his name as a winner in a couple of tournaments.
Therefore, he must focus only on the tournament and play his natural game if he really wants to finish impressively in the event.
Meanwhile, the United States Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III shot a spectacular hole in one on the par-three fifth to take two-stroke lead over eight players that also included world number two Rory McIlroy.
Love shot a six-under par 64 that levelled the course record at the prestigious PGA National Champion Course.
“If I had not birdied the last two holes, it still would have been a good start,” Love said. “It’s fun to tie the course record. And it’s fun to shoot low scores”.
McIlroy, who is looking for a win in the event that will take him to the first position in the Official World Golf Rankings, shot five birdies against a lone bogey on par-four eighth to finish four-under par 66.
