Lee Westwood got off to a slow start in Qatar
The world number one player, Lee Westwood, got off to a slow start at the Qatar Masters taking place in Qatar, Doha this weekend. The player posted a one over par to tie for eighteenth place.
Ranked as the number one player, Westwood’s rank could be in jeopardy this weekend. If the recent world number two player, Martin Kaymer, finishes in second place with Lee finishing no more than a tie for 22nd, Westwood won’t be number one anymore.
Despite not playing so well in the opening round, Westwood is determined to hold on to his prestigious rank.
Westwood had a number of slips during the back nine and the front nine. Lee posted a bogey on the second hole but overcame with a birdie on the sixth. Dropping a shot yet again on the eighth, the Englishman carded a birdie on the ninth.
The world number one made two consecutive bogeys on the thirteenth and fourteenth hole. Even though the number one player made a birdie on the eighteenth, the bogeys throughout the day had already done the damage.
Westwood is tied with Sergio Garcia, Louis Oosthuizen and thirteen other players. Even though Kaymer is his competition, Westy is happy about the fact that both the top ranked players are European.
"There isn't really a subplot for me [this week] and if you ask Martin, he'll probably say the same. It's nice for us and for European golf that one and two in the world are here at this tournament and both European”, said Westwood. "That just shows the
strength of The European Tour now, the kind of fields that we have attracted the first few weeks of the year”.
Westwood’s rival, Kaymer, on the other hand, did serve worse than him in the opening round. The German, Martin Kaymer, posted a five over par is tied for 74th place right now. The 2010 PGA Championship winner, Kaymer, made a bogey on the sixth
hole in the front nine. Playing it safe, the player made pars on the remaining holes but a bogey on the 12th and 17th and a double bogey on the fifteenth really strained Kaymer’s performance.
Paul Casey, who won at the Volvo Golf Champion, didn’t do so well either. Casey posted a 2 over par and is tied for 34th place. Beating all the other players was the South African, Retief Goosen, who is currently leading the Qatar Masters with
a three under par.
