Lee Westwood has an outside chance at the DP World Tour Championship
Lee Westwood has had a mediocre 2012 season. Although he failed, yet again, to win a major, the Englishman was solid over the course of the whole year.
The Englishman could not win on the PGA Tour this year but he had few close finishes in the United States.
Lee started off the season very well with a fourth place finish at the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship.
However, during the middle of the season, his form dipped a little. At the British Open, many tipped him to win his first major but he failed badly.
Westwood could only manage a T45 finish at the Royal Lytham. After that, many pundits said that he is best player ever to have not won a major title.
This comment speaks for him in two ways – one being the fact that he truly is one of the best talents in golf, on the other hand, he could not perform well in a major tournament.
On the European Tour this year, the world number four has enjoyed more success when compared to his performances on the PGA Tour.
He finished second at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic and then went on to win his 22nd title on the European year at the Nordea Masters.
However, his best result of the season was his third place finish at the Masters in April.
Westwood did make a little comeback at the end of the season. Although he could not win any tournament, his T14 finish at the BMW Masters and T6 finish at the WGC-HSBC Champions must have given him some confidence.
Westwood is ranked 12th in the Race to Dubai standings and his performances at Jumeirah would depend much on his drives.
Westwood is known for his ball control and big booming drives. If he can play to his potential in Dubai, then it will certainly make things interesting.
Rory McIlroy is a clear cut favourite for the tournament but the field at the Jumeirah Golf Club is pretty challenging.
"I think if I was completely fresh, I wouldn't have made the mistakes I did in Hong Kong last week," McIlroy said.
"So in some ways, even though I obviously wanted to defend my title in Hong Kong, maybe having the weekend off worked out for the best, as it gave me the chance to rest up and recharge the batteries. It's already been an amazing season, and hopefully I can
round it off in style in Dubai this week".
Although Rory is the favourite, Westwood is a dark horse. He can certainly surprise everybody with what he is capable of.
He has the talent and the character needed to win a tournament. All he needs is a good start at Jumeirah.
