Lee Westwood honoured with OBE by the Queen of England
World number two Lee Westwood has been honoured with an Order of the British Empire (OBE) accolade for giving an outstanding performance all year long. The accolade was given away on the birthday of Queen Elizabeth II.
The 38-year-old golfer was made the Officer of the Order of the British Empire, which is one of the five OBEs presented to the most outstanding British citizens of the year. Westwood was presented with the accolade, as he is the
first European to claim the highest spot in golf after a wait of two decades. He resumed the position as the world number one on October 31st, 2010, while displacing Tiger Woods from the spot, which he sustained for five consecutive years.
Westwood is the first Englishman to achieve the milestone in a decade. Earlier, not a single European occupied a place in top two spots. In addition to that, he won twice on the Professional Golf Association Tour and 21 times on
the European tour. His latest accomplishments include a win at the St Jude Classic and Ballantines Championship. Moreover, he led the European Ryder Cup team to success at Celtic Manor last year by contributing two and a half points. The veteran is a runner-up
at 2010 Masters and bagged a similar finish at the Open Championship.
Apart from him, horse trainer Henry Cecil and two cricketers from England's Ashes team were also bestowed with the same honour. Cecil was presented with a knighthood Commander of the British Empire for providing services for 40
years in the area, while David Higgins, who is the chief executive of the Olympics Delivery Authority, earned it for spreading awareness in the region regarding sports.
English cricketer Andrew Strauss, who won the Ashes series on the Australian soil, was given an OBE for providing uncountable services in cricket, whereas his fellow compatriot Alastair Cook was presented with Member of the Order
of the British Empire accolade.
