Lee Westwood hoping to make it big at the KLM Open on the European Tour this week
World Number Two golfer, Lee Westwood is eager to post another win at the closing of the season, as he is hoping to dot it not later than this week, at the 92nd edition of KLM Open being played at the scenic Hilversumsche Golf Club, in Netherlands.
Already on top of the official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) twice this year, Westwood is trailing the current World Number One, Luke Donald by a wide margin and will be bringing tons of experience to tackle the strong field at the event.
He said, “It's nice to be back. I think it's changed a little bit - it's a bit longer now. It's obviously changing and improving all the time, and it's nice to be back and playing what is very much a traditional course, tree lined and very tight. It’s slightly
reminiscent of a Woodhall Spa or a Sunningdale or Walton Heath or Swinley Forest.”
After pulling in a whirlwind spectacular season where he outshined many of the current big guns of the sport, Westwood took a two-week long vacation in Barbados and feels rejuvenated with the much needed break. It is more of a schedule Westwood has religiously
followed for a couple of years and conceded that it helps him unwind for the gruesome season ahead, which is often coupled with long hour flights to the other side of the Atlantic.
He added, “You have to look for points during the year to have a holiday and recharge, and always after the PGA Championship is one of those for me.”
Westwood admitted that he has much work to undertake to topple Donald from the summit, but also hoped to bag in the lucrative €300,000 at the Dunhill Links Championship which will follow after the KLM Open challenge. The 38-year-old Englishman will then
fly to Omega Mission Hills World Cup Golf in China, and will return to Dubai for the last event of the year.
World Number Three, Martin Kaymer, the defending champion at KLM Open, has miraculously struck form last week where he finished for an outright second at the Omega European Masters, and is all set to retain the title he won last year.
Westwood was dethroned from his 17-month reign on top of the OWGR earlier in February by none other than Kaymer, who posted another runner-up finish at the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship in Tucson, Arizona. He regained the top slot after his back-to-back
victories on his favourite Asian Turf, before finally losing it again to his countryman, Donald, at the BMW PGA Championship.
Reigning US Open champion, Rory McIlroy will also be on the field, posing a serious threat to Westwood’s ambitious charge as he seems to have fully recovered from the injury he acquired at the PGA Championship, last month. He also posted a strong joint third
finish last week alongside three other players.
