Lee Westwood is fit to play the British Open
The world number three Lee Westwood has confirmed that he is fit to play the British Open, at the Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club, slated to start from Thursday, July 19, 2012.
Last week, he slipped while moving to the first tee on third day of the French Open and posted a 76 on the leaderboard.
Thereafter, the rumours started to pop up that he may miss out the third major event of the year because of the leg injury. However, he bounced back strongly with a one-under par 70 on the final day to declare his fitness.
“The leg is fine – it wasn’t a problem today,” said Westwood, who decided not to withdraw from the event after an advice by the fitness consultant, Steve McGregor.
At the same time, he has announced his withdrawal from the Scottish Open, in order to take some rest prior to moving to Royal Lytham.
Right from the start of the 2012 golf season, Westwood is committed to end his winless record in the major championships.
He played brilliantly on each of the Asian, European as well as on the PGA Tour this year. He has five top-10 finishes in eight events on the PGA Tour and five top-10’s in 10 European Tour events, including a win in the Nordea Masters.
Apart from that, he also successfully defended the Asian Tour’s CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters title this year.
In the meantime, Marcel Siem of Germany recorded an impressive 4-under par 67 to record a one-stroke victory over Italy’s Francesco Molinari at the French Open, to qualify for the Open Championship.
Last year, Thomas Levet broke his leg after jumping into a water lake on the course while celebrating his win in the tournament. This time, the new champion avoided to repeat the same mistake and stayed away from the water.
“I’m just going to have some nice French champagne,” Siem said. “It means a lot to me. So many tournaments I kind of destroyed already this year, I’m so happy I got it done in the end”.
“I was very nervous. The last stretch is one of the toughest stretches we have on tour and I made some great shots,” he added. “I stayed very calm. It’s all about winning in the end and now I’m in the Open, which is unbelievable”.
