Lee Westwood knows The Open Championship is over for him
World number three, Lee Westwood has never won a major title in his career. This was probably his best chance, his game suited the course very well and he was in good run of form, coming into the tournament.
The likes of Ernie Els and other great names of golf said that Westwood is the favourite to win the Open this year but the Englishman never really got going.
Three disappointing rounds by Lee at the Royal Lytham mean that his chances to win his first major are over. Many people consider him to be the best player ever to have never won a major.
His fellow country man, Luke Donald also could not quite live up to the expectations of the people.
On Saturday, the conditions were glorious for golf and playing alongside Tom Watson would have been an inspiration but all he could manage was one-over 71 at the third round.
It has been a disappointing tournament for the 39-year-old, he has not broken par once in three rounds. "Not hitting the ball great ... nothing's been that good this week," the 39-year-old Westwood said.
Tom Watson, an experienced pro at the tour is a big fan of Westwood and believes that he will win a major in his career.
"I wish I could have inspired him with my play, I think I dragged him down," said the American, who made the cut by birdying No. 18 on Friday, but shot a 76 the following day.
“He will be there again, I expect him to win a major championship. He has a lot of talent, has a variety of shots, and hits the ball with authority”.
Lee might have had a poor third round but he surely did enjoy the company of Tom Watson. "Very easy to play with," Westwood said. "He's a great ambassador for the sport".
Lee must now focus on the season’s fourth major, the PGA Championship. Being one of the best ball strikers, everyone expected him to do well, especially the English fans that are anxiously waiting for an end to English drought at the Open.
Lee’s score after the third round is 4-over and it is unlikely that anyone can come back from this score, with just one round to go.
