Lee Westwood leading the third round of Nedbank Golf challenge
World number one Lee Westwood posted his highest round of the week and extended his lead to five shots after the end of the third round. Westwood, who was leading by the tournament on Friday as well, is now 13-under overall at
the Nedbank Golf Challenge, which is taking place at Sun City in South Africa. Westwood is now ahead of Tim Clark and Ross Fisher who are tied at second place.
South African player, Clark, carded an 8-under which was the same as that of English Rosh Fisher. However, Fisher did not perform as well as he did yesterday. The Spanish player, Miguel Angel Jimenez carded a 71 and he is now alone
in fourth place. Jimenez played decently in the first two rounds as well by posting 69’s, but looking at the way Westy is going, the chances of Jimenez winning are very slim.
If Tiger Woods wins the Chevron Challenge taking place in California, Westy’s newly earned top position may be in jeopardy. Westwood just recently became world’s number one golfer when he finished Tiger Wood’s five-year long reign
as golf’s top cat. Lee, however, should not be worried because if he finishes in the top two at Sun City, his spot is secure.
"I thought it was tricky out there today, there was a bit more wind than there has been on the other days," said Westwood. "The tees were back so the holes played longer and it was pretty hot out there. Down that back nine I felt
a little bit drained and my legs got a little bit weary, it was probably just the heat. But to come out of it with a five shot lead is a big bonus."
Westwood, who just failed to set a new course record by one stroke during round two, picked up two shots on the front nine to reach the turn in 26. Things started looking good for Lee as he birdied the tenth hole, but the bogeys
on the 13th and 17th were very disappointing shots from the number one.
Ross Fisher, who scored under par for both round one and round two, carded a one-over 73 during the third round. Ross scored a 34 on his outward nine, but posting bogeys on the 14th and 15th and then a double-bogey
on the 17th really damaged his overall performance.
Overall, the third round was surely an interesting one. With Westwood leading the tournament now, all golf fans are waiting to see who wins the Nedbank Challenge.
