Lee Westwood leads Nedbank Golf Challenge
World number one, Lee Westwood posted an amazing 8-under-par 64 to open with a three shot lead, at the Nedbank Golf Challenge. Westwood now has a three shot lead at the challenge taking place, in Sun City, in South Africa. The amazing player had the privilege of a bogey free round and is now leading the 12 man field, with an overall, twelve under par. Westwood posted eight birdies during the second round and left, fellow Ryder Cup team member Ross Fisher, in second place.
Other European stars are tied for third place with a total of six under. These include the Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez, Italian Edoardo Molinari and Northern Irishmen, Padraig Harrington. Harrington who had the first round lead yesterday, with score of 66 ,has now dropped to number three. This Dubliner could only finish the day with one birdie that made his score to a six under 72. This has put his overall score to an even par.
Yesterday, Westwood posted a 68 but really showed the world that he is number one by, the way he performed today. No wonder it was Westwood that ended the five year long reign of Tiger Woods, as the best player in golf. During the second round, Lee picked up four shots on his outward nine and performed similarly on the front nine, as well. Despite his brilliant swings, Lee could not match the record shared by Ernie Els, Nick Watney and Henrik Stenson. Due to just one stroke, he wasn’t able to establish a record at the Gary Player Country Club
"I played with Henrik when he shot 63 [in 2008] so I was well aware of what the course record was," said Westwood, who admitted earlier this week he is still troubled by his long-standing, calf injury.
"I haven't played a lot recently so I still feel a little bit rusty," added Westwood. "But I didn't today. Today it was much more like me, getting the most out of the round. I seem to have got into the swing of things now. It was a good day."
West’s lead in Nedbank was very smoothly coincided with Tiger Wood’s lead, at the Chevron World Challenge. If Woods is to win in California, and Lee doesn’t manage to finish
in second place or above, Tiger will become number one again. Even though, both the challenges are taking place in different continents, both Tiger and Woods are trying their best to be winners, in the race to be number one.
