Lee Westwood looking forward to make a good run at the Players Championship – Golf News
The world number three, Lee Westwood is looking forward to contend successfully at the Players Championship, scheduled to be staged at the TPC Sawgrass from May 10 to 13, 2012.
He is confident to outshine his opponents, especially after gaining great momentum in the final two rounds of last week’s Wells Fargo Championship.
He was one-under while entering the final two rounds at the Quail Hollow Country Club, as he missed the cut with only one stroke.
Thereafter, he carded 68 and 66 to make a charge on the leader board to finish three strokes behind the playoff trio, Rickie Fowler, Rory McIlroy and D. A. Points. He was tied for the fifth position, with a tournament score of 11-under par 277.
In addition to that, he tied for the fourth position in his last appearance at the Players Championship in 2010, his third top-three finish in nine starts.
In 2010, he also led the tournament after three rounds at 13-under par. However, he missed the chance to win after he made some poor shots on Sunday to settle for 74.
He is now in brilliant form that may help him improve his record in the event, also known as the fifth major of the year.
"I’m playing solidly, aren’t I, won last week (in Indonesia) and third in the Masters before that," Westwood said, answering his own question.
"I played well this week aside from some putts, and next week is a golf course I love playing. It suits my game”.
“I’ve been in with a chance two or three times around there, so yeah, I’m looking forward to next week," he added.
With his performance on the final day at Quail Hollow, he also tied the course record on the front nine, as he signed a 30 on his scorecard.
However, he slowed down on the back nine of the course because of its difficult layout.
"It was a great front nine, wasn’t it, put me in with a chance of winning the tournament," Westwood said. "There’s some brutal flags out there on that back nine, and it’s been tough".
Westwood now seems quite positive to continue with his good form for the rest of the season.
