Lee Westwood not happy with the blazing guns on the field at Masters
Another of the unfortunate English golfers, world number three Lee Westwood will be pitched in yet another attempt to bring an end to his major drought at this week’s Masters.
Westwood, who has an astounding career and has been on top of the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR), has never been able to bag a major title much like his countrymen Luke Donald and Colin Montgomerie.
The 37-year-old is not particularly happy about the field in consideration at the revered Augusta National.
A chuckling Westwood said, “I’m excited to play in the Masters and I’m excited to come here. I’m not so excited that everybody is playing well, obviously. I wish that everybody was playing poorly”.
All of the top-five players on the OWGR are performing brilliantly at the moment and are more or less poised at the same status in terms of their grasp on the sport.
A resurging Tiger Woods is perhaps the most important point of consideration for all the players contesting in the event including Westwood.
Westwood insisted that he is in top form, despite a loose start of the season this year.
He posted a strong finish at last week’s Shell Houston Open, an event often considered as the launching pad for the Masters.
He added, "My game feels in good shape and I’m pleased having played last week (at the Shell Houston Open) after having two weeks off, because I don’t practice a lot when I’m at home".
"It was good to play in Houston and shake off a bit of rust and be competitive going into this week. I’m pretty confident".
This will be Westwood’s 13th appearance in the event and, although the figure itself may not be a good omen for the Englishman, he is all set to claim the first major title of his career this week.
He made his first appearance in the event in the year 1997, and posted a joint 24th. His highest finish came in the year 2010, when he was forced to take runner-up position by the rampaging Phil Mickelson.
Westwood has won 37 professional titles in his stellar career and has been nominated European Tour Golfer of the Year award three times.
A major victory is all there is left to cap his glorious golfing career at the twilight.
