Lee Westwood not thinking about number one spot at Dunhill Links Championship
World number two Lee Westwood will bid to become the planet’s premier golfer when he lines up for action at the Dunhill Links championship this weekend — however the 37-year-old is not thinking about the number one spot.
If Westwood finishes in first or second place this weekend, he will knock Tiger Woods off the top position. However, he is focused on performing well at the pro-am tournament this weekend.
He told reporters that: “The thing this week to do is to concentrate on the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship as it's easy to get distracted and not be able to refocus after (the Ryder Cup) last week. Going to number two on Monday and having a chance to
go to number one, I could get drawn towards that as well. But obviously if I take care of business on the golf course this week at the Dunhill Links then the world number one ranking takes care of itself.”
Insisted on playing
Due to the way the ranking system works, Westwood could have automatically taken the top spot if he had taken the next two weeks off to recover from the Ryder Cup, but he insisted that he wanted to assume the mantle of world number one by playing.
He said that: “That's not me. That's not the way I want to do it. I want to get to world number one by playing the way I have for the last two years and proving I'm the best."
He is among nine of the triumphant European Ryder Cup team who will take part in the event, including match-winner Graeme McDowell, Edoardo and Francesco Molinari, triple-major winner Padraig Harrington and Rory McIlroy. Ryder Cup captain Coln Montgomerie
will also play, as will his assistants Darren Clarke and Paul McGinley.
