Lee Westwood off to a great start at the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters – Golf News
The world number three Lee Westwood got off to a flying start in the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters, as he carded a seven-under par 65 in the opening round, on Thursday, April 19, 2012.
Westwood took a week off prior to coming to the Royale Jakarta Golf Club in order to defend his title.
“I had a break last week and hardly hit any balls,” he said. “I played a lot of golf earlier this year and needed a rest. It was good to go home and recharge my batteries because the Masters always takes a lot out of you. It is physically and mentally very
demanding”.
He finished third in the Masters Tournament where he had an easy chance of earning his first major victory of the career.
Westwood’s putting was at its worst in the tournament that forced him to stay two strokes behind the playoffs duo, Bubba Watson and Louis Oosthuizen.
According to his stats in the tournament, he had the longest putt, 10 feet, came on the final hole of the tournament.
Following the Masters, he planned to get back to the course while bringing some positive changes in his putting.
Therefore, he looked much better in the opening round of the Indonesian Masters and carded three back-to-back birdies to start off his day.
Later in the round, he recorded another six birdies against two bogeys to take a two-stroke lead over Arnond Vongvani, who managed to score five-under par 67.
“I played well. I got a fast start, birdied the first three holes, birdied the sixth, dropped at seventh, and birdied in eight and nine. So I’m five under [halfway through first round]. That’s a good score,” said Westwood.
“Nine birdies, that’s a good round in any golf course. It was quite a tricky test but it was a good game,” he added.
Vongvani also had a great day as he continued his good form on the tour by carding a bogey-free round on Thursday.
He is currently playing his rookie season on the Asian Tour and has already recorded two top-10 finishes in the first quarter.
