Lee Westwood praises Nicolas Colsaerts’ performance in the four-ball match in the Ryder Cup
Lee Westwood hailed the Ryder Cup rookie, Nicolas Colsaerts, for his brilliant performance in the Friday afternoon four-ball match against Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker.
Colsaerts, who became the only Belgian player in the history to represent the European Ryder Cup team, recorded a 10-under par score, en route to a 1UP victory.
"I didn't play my best but Nicolas Colsaerts was brilliant to watch,” Westwood said. “We didn't just want the half, it was vital we got the win and the full point”.
"It was a pleasure to watch. I tried to stay in holes and play along, but it was one of those amazing days. Nicolas will look back on that and smile,” the world number four added.
Throughout the round, it seemed as if the Colsaerts and Woods were appointed to earn shots for their respective teams and Westwood and Stricker were there for supporting their teammates.
On the first hole, Woods recorded a birdie and gave his team a one-shot advantage. The Belgian then levelled the scores with a birdie on the fourth hole.
A birdie on the ninth hole, followed by an amazing eagle on the 10th allowed the Europeans to add another two shots to their scorecards.
Starting from the 11th hole, Woods tried to make a comeback by earning three shots. However, Colsaerts was not in a mood to give any chance to his rivals on the course and defeated his opponents on the 13th and the 15th hole.
At the end of the match, Westwood and Colsaerts were one stroke better than the Americans and earned the only point for the European team in the four-ball matches in the afternoon.
"It was a lot of fun. I've never had so much fun and I want to have more,” Colsaerts said. "I dreamt about this. Under the circumstances, without a doubt”.
Colsaerts is now paired with the Spaniard star Sergio Garcia for Saturday morning foursomes. On the other hand, Westwood will be playing along his compatriot Luke Donald.
Both Garcia and Donald were paired in the Friday morning foursomes and lost to Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley 4&3.
