Lee Westwood preparing for the Masters Tournament at the Shell Houston Open - Golf News
The Englishman Lee Westwood is aiming to end his preparations for the Masters on a high note with a victory in the Shell Houston Open at the Redstone Golf Club in Humble, Texas.
The tournament is scheduled to take place from March 29 to April 1, 2012.
On the other hand, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson decided to start their preparations at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
"I didn't think it was that necessary," the 38-year-old world No. 3 said. "It's a nice place to go and soak up the atmosphere with nobody there and get some work done, but the course isn't really reflective of how it's going to be on Thursday morning next
week".
Westwood is planning to end his major title drought this year. According to him, he is in a perfect shape to record his first major victory of the career.
He had five top-three finishes in the last 10 appearances that he made in the major championships.
They also include the second-place finish in the Maters and the British Open in 2010.
He said that his performances in the major events had been satisfactory for the last three years. Therefore, he definitely has what it takes to be a winner in the major championships.
Moreover, he believes that his game is getting better with the passage of time and he has become accustomed to playing in the conditions the venues of the events offer to the players.
Therefore, he can use his experience in the upcoming Maters Tournament and outclass his opponents on the field.
Apart from this, he said that he must take the Masters just like another golf tournament because there is nothing different except the change in names.
Otherwise, the players are same, the golf course is same and the rules too are same as the other events.
He is likely to play his natural game, which is the best way to go for a win in the events that offer pressure to the players.
"You really should go into it treating it like just another tournament. We have plenty of them and major championships are no different," he added.
He also stated, "Some of the tests are a little bit more severe -- next week's greens will be faster than most we putt on all year -- but I feel like I've got a good enough game to cope with those things".
Phil Mickelson will also be in the field of the Shell Houston Cup and he is currently in a good form to defend the title that he won last year.
