Lee Westwood ready to challenge Martin Kaymer's number one spot – Golf news
Lee Westwood says he is ready to overthrow Martin Kaymer in the WGC-Cadillac Championship, which will take place at the TPC Blue Monster of Doral Golf Resort and Spa in Florida on Sunday.
He disclosed his intentions while addressing the press after the practice match held on Wednesday. He said, “I'll be going out to win the tournament, as I'm sure Martin will be. I can't afford to think about the rankings, I'll just take one day at a time.
My game is not all that far away and I've just got to be patient.”
Westwood lost his world number one spot recently after Martin Kaymer finished second in the Accenture Match Play Championship. The Englishman failed to reach the semi-finals and lost the chance to remain at the top. Meanwhile, Kaymer gained a 33.23-point
average on the Official World Golf Rankings and overthrew Westwood.
However, Westwood believes he is going to do well in the tournament as he has been working hard on the game. The Englishman claimed that he was facing some swing problems during the start of the season, but is now ready for a victory.
He added, “With Donald winning the first World Championship event, the Accenture World Match Play, the odds are in favour of another European victory this weekend. And whatever happens over the next four days will decide where everyone stands on Sunday evening.”
Recently, Westwood was eliminated from the Honda Classic golf tournament after the second round.
The player who self-acclaims that he is ready for the battle of the throne will tee off at 12.54 p.m. according to American time on Thursday. He will meet Kaymer and Donald in the group as decided by the tournament officials.
The Cadillac Championship is carrying 550 Fed Ex points, which means if Westwood lifts the trophy, he will regain his glory.
