Lee Westwood secures the third position at the Masters
Lee Westwood shot a 4-under 68 in the final round of the Masters, finishing tied for the third position on Sunday, April 8, 2012.
This was the third time for the 38-year-old English professional golf player to finish the mega event in the top-10.
He recorded T6 in 1999, finished as a runner-up in 2010, and now he has secured the 3rd position in 2012, at the Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia.
Since turning professional in 1993, he displayed a tremendous performance in the major tournaments, but has not won any event so far. He has finished 13 times in the top-10 and is hoping to win his first major this year.
The 21-time European Tour winner was leading on Thursday. He made 7 impressive birdies, two bogeys and reached on top of the leaderboard in the first round.
Such enormous scoring was one of the best and he competed well till day-end. However, Westwood’s second round performance was not so impressive.
He was unable to score birdies on the front nine holes of Augusta, but he neither made a bogey. Then, on the back nine holes, he made two birdies, a bogey and ended with a double-bogey on the 18th hole.
Finishing a round by scoring a -5 and then +1 shows inconsistency in his game. A similar case happened in the third round on Saturday, as he finished at-par by scoring four birdies and bogeys.
The competition was tough and all the players were giving tough times to Westwood. However, he improved his swing and somehow scored a 4-under 68 in the final round.
He made three birdies and bogeys, on the front nine holes of the course. Then on the back nine, he amazed the spectators by recording three consecutive birdies and also ended the tournament with birdie.
"Other guys have made putts all week and expected to make them," Westwood said.
"Unfortunately the weakness in my game is costing me tournaments. It's frustrating. I can't seem to turn it around at the moment. I know that when I do, the wins will come. Nothing dropped for me. Even today, the birdies I had were from times I hit it in
close".
Westwood was disappointed at the end of the day. He was striving for a victory, but his inconsistent scores caused him a defeat.
Now, he has high plans to recover and improve his performance before the next upcoming major in the current year.
