Lee Westwood shows interest in playing against Rory McIlroy at Honda Classic – Golf News
Former world number one, Lee Westwood has expressed his interest in pairing with Rory McIlroy again in the Honda Classic at the PGA National Champion Course, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
Recently, Westwood lost to Northern Ireland’s McIlroy in the semi finals of the last week’s Accenture Match Play Championship.
The PGA event is scheduled to start from Thursday, March 1, 2012, where Westwood will partner with Tiger Woods in the opening round of the event.
Westwood said that if he will be facing any rivalry in the tournament, he would like it to be against McIlroy. He praised McIlroy by saying that he is the hottest player in the world of golf today.
"I am willing to go along with that if you want to write about it,” he said. “I have been around a long time now - this is my 19th year out here - and there's been various rivalries thrown at me during my career”.
He continued by saying that he does not pay much attention to what people say about his rivalries, as he believes in playing pure golf and learning through contention against good players.
"That's all I try to do. I figure that if I'm going to keep playing well and getting in contention for tournaments Rory's pretty much going to be in a similar position, so we're going to be playing together a lot," Westwood said.
According to Westwood, it all happens in the game of golf, when players take their rivalries down in one tournament and face defeat in another.
According to the current Official World Golf Rankings and the ranking points that Honda Classic is offering, McIlroy can take Donald’s position with a win in the tournament.
On the other hand, Lee Westwood will have to wait for next week’s Cadillac Championship if he wants to regain his position on top of the OWGR.
Apart from the rankings, the main purpose of both the players playing well is to ensure that they are headed in the right direction with the first major of the year, the Masters Tournament, approaching next month.
