Lee Westwood steady as Martin Kaymer in trouble at Masters
Masters is one of the much awaited tournaments of the year. It commenced on 7 April, 2011, with two Europeans leading the way. Alvaro Quiros and youngster Rory McIlroy share the lead. Much was expected from World Number one Martin Kaymer of Germany, but
he failed to produce his excellence on the course.
The first round concluded yesterday as Kaymer was placed way down on the leader board. He was looking under stress and managed to card a round of six-under par, 78.
Kaymer’s score card shows that the course conditions were a little too tough for him. The PGA Championship winner has failed to make it through the cutline in his last three outings here and it might have been the pressure which got to him. The golfer couldn't
hold his nerves as he entered this tournament as the number one ranked player in the world.
Kaymer is now placed at the 93rd spot among the 99 players, which is a complete disappointment for him. He had a double bogey, six bogeys and only two birdies in a day in which it seemed like he couldn’t find the fairway.
Now, Kaymer is also in the danger zone of missing the projected cutline. It will take a titanic effort from him to produce brilliance on the second day. He will have to post an under par round on the second day to be among the players making the cut.
The sorry Kaymer said, “For me it was very difficult. Every day that I played here was a tough day so far. So, yeah, I was disappointed, because there is some golf courses that suit you and some they just don’t.”
As for Westwood, he looked a bit steady on the first day. His score of even-par, 72 on the first day looks like he was getting used to the course layout. Westwood had four birdies and four bogeys on his score card. It is expected from him that he will make
a move on the second day to jump on the leader board. He is currently placed at the 31st spot on the score board.
Westwood who overtook the number one spot from Tiger Woods last year is hoping to improve his rankings further. Now that Kaymer is in trouble, the rankings are wide open. Westwood certainly has a chance of regaining his honourable number one spot. Although,
he is seven shots behind the leader, Westwood has the ability to jump out of any situation.
Last year, Westwood started his final round as the leader but Phil Mickelson was too good for him. The Englishman finished at the second spot last year which was his best finish at the Masters.
With the likes of Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods in carding under par rounds, the world rankings are certainly going to change after the Masters concludes on Sunday.
