Lee Westwood successfully defends title at Indonesian Masters – Golf News
English Lee Westwood survived the final round of the CIMB NIAGA Indonesian Masters to successfully defend his title at the Royale Jakarta Golf Club, on Sunday, April 22, 2012.
Westwood carded a two-over par 74 following his tiring performance on the final day of the tournament, where he suffered five bogeys against three birdies in total.
He entered the final round with an eight-stroke lead over Lee Sung. That was the major reason behind his survival, despite a poor score on Sunday.
"You never know how to play with such a big lead. You don't know if you should attack or defend. It is quite hard to get your mental attitude around it," he said.
According to Westwood, he exhibited a consistent performance throughout the tournament. However, he started feeling tired because of the drain-weather conditions on Sunday.
“I felt tired after the 12th hole but I held on,” he said. “When you are in contention and under pressure, it seems to zap your energy faster. It was a case of staying patient and calm and playing the holes correctly. It was exhausting”.
The golf analysts believe that Westwood will be feeling really confident after the impressive victory he has achieved. Moreover, it will definitely help him boost his morale for winning the first major title of his career.
Westwood himself admitted that he was feeling confident after hoisting the trophy, as it will help him gain momentum on the course.
"I've played well without any wins so hopefully I can go on and win other tournaments,” he said.
Westwood was happy as the win allowed him to cheer his fans, especially after a near miss at the Masters Tournament in the second week of April.
He carded an eight-under par tournament score to finish two strokes behind the playoffs duo, Bubba Watson and Louis Oosthuizen.
He then blamed his putting for his defeat in the tournament where he was close to registering a win for the first time in the 56 attempts that he made.
Therefore, he brought slight changes in his technique that proved to be successful in the Asian Tour event.
He now plans to keep his winning momentum on the PGA Tour and will try to surge to the top of the Official World Golf Rankings.
