Lee Westwood suffers a bumpy end to his second round at the Masters – Golf News
Lee Westwood faltered on the final hole on the second day of the Masters Tournament to hand over the lead to Jason Dufner and Fred Couples on Friday, April 6, 2012.
Westwood started his round with a one-stroke lead over his rivals. While reaching the 18th hole, he was standing at a six-under for the tournament.
He putted the final hole to suffer a double bogey and slipped from his first position on the leaderboard to share the third spot with Bubba Watson, Rory McIlroy, Louis Oosthuizen and Sergio Garcia.
This is Westwood’s 56th attempt to record a win in the major championships and his final-hole performance gave a glimpse of the reason why he always fails to achieve his goal.
It may be unwise to judge his performance on the basis of just a single hole. However, the judgment seems to be impulsive especially after 55 failed attempts.
As Westwood himself said, “I’m in a good position going into the weekend and I’m not going to be too far off the lead. That’s a position you want to be in”.
There is no doubt that Westwood has a great track record in his professional career. Yet, he needs to carry on his experience in avoiding such mistakes.
“Lee has 33 international victories, with four in 2011, is a seven-time Ryder Cup Team member, has 13 Masters appearances, and his best finish was second in 2010. And most importantly, a first round of 67 today,” Colin Montgomerie talked about him in a press
conference after the first round.
In the 2010 Masters, Westwood had a lead while entering the final round of the tournament. Yet, he failed to wear the green jacket as Phil Mickelson snatched the top spot at the end of the tournament.
Despite the hunger of the major victory, he said earlier that it does not matter much whether he wins a major or not, as it will not make any difference later.
“I prefer people to remember me as the person I am rather than the golfer,” he says, not altogether convincingly.
Regardless of what he said, he must know that he will have to make space in the hearts of people through his game.
Otherwise, he will be same as the other golfers who are known only to their friends and family.
No doubt he has registered a number of wins in his career. However, a major win will differentiate him from other golfers, who also have several wins to their names.
