Lee Westwood to feature in the Indonesian Masters – Golf news
Starting from April 21, the Indonesian Masters will be the next destination of the Asian Tour giants like Kiradech Aphibarnra, who won the Sail Open in India, last month. It was Aphibarnra’s first victory on the Asian Tour and he will be entering the tournament
with considerable aplomb.
Kiradech will be accompanied by his countryman, Thongchai Jaidee, who has been a three-time Order of Merit Champion. These formidable Asian star golfers will be challenged by the reigning World Number Two, Lee Westwood, who is known to be notorious on Asian
courses. Westwood has a shining record on Asian tour and has expressed several times of his fondness for Asian golf.
Philippines’ celebrated golfer, Angelo Que, along with India’s Jyoti Randhawa, South African, Peter karmis and Siddikur of Bangladesh will also be participating in the $750,000 event. Singapore’s Mardan Mamat, Chinese Taipei’s Lin Wen-tang, a five-time winner
and Australia’s Darren Beck will also be among the star studded contenders list of the event.
Kiradech, however, will probably be on top of the list of favourites with his recent maiden win at the Sail Open. The 21-year-old big hitter of Thailand is often remarked as the John Daly of Asia with his thrashing tee shots. “The Asian Tour has done a lot
for me and I’m going to play as much as I can on Tour. Hopefully this win will give me more confidence to bring my game to the next level,” said Kiradech. Being a fan of Westwood, Kiradech relishes a chance to be playing with the top golfer himself. “I admire
Lee’s fighting spirit. He struggled before and fought back to become the world number one. He is a really good player with strong will power,” said Kiradech.
Que will be one of many among the favourites in the event, having recently finished ninth at the Avantha Masters in India, this February. His last of the third major win came in Malaysia, last year, but he apparently lost his touch giving into self inflicted
pressure. “I was pushing myself after my win last year. Now I’m just thinking about playing the best that I can and to not put too much pressure on myself,” said Que.
India’s Gaganjeet Bhullar, who won his first Asian Tour title here two years ago, will participate with some fond memories of the place. His win marked an amazing run of victories for him as he went over to win the second title last season and has already
won four events on the Indian Circuit this year.
Indonesian Masters is poised to become one of the major golf tournaments in Asia as organisers are working to raise the prize money as well as the status of the event. Co-sponsored by Four Seasons Hotel, Royale Jakarta Golf Club, PNTS, Garuda Indonesia and
Mercedes-Benz, Indonesian open will be played at the scenic Royale Jakarta Golf Club, from April 21-24.
