Lee Westwood vows not to repeat last year’s mistakes ahead of the BMW PGA Championship
Lee Westwood will be back to challenge the world number two Luke Donald for the coveted title of BMW PGA Championship this week and will be hoping to reverse his downfall in last year’s episode.
Westwood, who had been ruling the sport since the start of the year in 2011, had to suffer a drastic defeat at Wentworth last year when his approach shot on the second playoff hole found the water hazard adjacent to the green.
Donald jumped in to shoot an excellent approach to finally land the title and soar to the top of the OWGR. He remained on top of the rankings till the end of the previous season.
Westwood has not been able to perform well since the start of the current season, battering form vows and a gruesome elbow injury.
Although he won the Indonesian Masters but his overall performance has left many unanswered questions about his future for the rest of the season. He is now glad to be back on his happy hunting ground to pitch his attempt for the title.
He said, “It's always nice to come back to Wentworth. It looks like a great week's weather, and it makes it an even more special week if people are walking around in warm sunshine and it has a summery feel to it, this tournament”.
Westwood reminisced about his loss last year and lamented the fact that he fell for a late birdie on the closing hole in regulation and had to go for the playoff, which should not have happened in the first place.
He added, “It shouldn't have gone to a play-off last year really. If I'm being critical of myself - three-putting 16, and I didn't birdie 17 going in with a three iron, and then I had a five footer on the last for birdie that I missed. So I had my chances
- it was my own fault”.
The 39-year-old Englishman is among the many grizzled veterans from European Tour in particular and from England in general who haven’t won a major title so far in their otherwise stellar careers.
Westwood is one of the strong advocates of the BMW PGA Championship and considers it one of the European Tour’ unofficial major event.
