Lee Westwood vows to take down the Dubai Desert Classic title this week
World number three Lee Westwood is all charged up for a blistering start of the Dubai Desert Classic this week and is hoping to snap out of a disappointing start of the year so far.
The grizzled Englishman has been struggling since the beginning of the year, occasionally because of recurring neck and elbow injury and partially because of his form that returns to haunt him every now and then.
Having a strong penchant for playing golf all over the globe, Westwood is probably a true international player in the sense that he has won more titles around the world than any other player.
He loves to challenge the windy Middle Eastern courses as well as the tropical humid layouts in Far East.
For the moment, he hopes to take down the strong field this week in his third appearance for the European Tour in 2012.
He said, “This is obviously a place I like coming and playing. I love this golf course. I think it's a good test and you get what you deserve around it. It's usually in great condition and I don't think this year is any exception".
He went on to say, "It's a nice place to come to play early in the season. I came and practised here three weeks ago to get ready for Abu Dhabi and Qatar, so it’s the last of a four-week trip. It’s good to be back here and be competitive”.
Westwood started off the season with a lopsided performance at Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship where he finished for a joint 17th.
He later admitted that he had been struggling under a deteriorating neck and elbow injury and decided to carry on with the weekend, despite being in bad shape.
He later went over to try his luck at the Commercialbank Qatar Masters but finished for a joint 12th down the leaderboard.
He is now contemplating a victory at Dubai amid a strong field of grizzled veterans and young blazing guns.
Westwood also lauded the ground work at the course, the venue of this week’s Dubai event and reaffirmed his vow to land the title.
He also commended the rapid expansion of the European Tour which is now holding 46 events in around 25 countries worldwide.
