Lee Westwood wins Indonesian Masters – Golf Update
Englishman Lee Westwood posted a final round 69 to win the Indonesian Masters by three shots on Sunday, April 24 at the Jakarta Golf Club.
This victory has given Westwood high hopes on reclaiming the Number one spot. Currently ranked Number two, Westwood was leading by five shots going off into the final round. Westwood put up a strong fight against Thailand’s professional golfer Thongchai
Jaidee, who posted 65 to finish in second place.
The English player, Westwood also celebrated his 38th birthday on Sunday and said that this would definitely be the most memorable birthday for him. The player, who had replaced Tiger Woods, had held the top ranking for 17 weeks before being dethroned
by German Martin Kaymer.
“It was about coming here this week and trying to win the Indonesian Masters and I've done that. I've ticked every box this week so we will have to wait and see what happens," said the Englishman who has done everything he can to regain his top position
back.
The first nine holes played by Westwood were all pars, but the player rose from the ashes when he made an amazing birdie on the 11th hole.
“Yeah, that was probably the hardest putt I had all day," he said. "It was 15 feet and had a three feet break on it. I birdied the next with two good shots and played solidly. I managed to pick up a few shots and birdied the 16 from four feet. I was quite
comfortable after that."
The player actually had to wait a while to hit his last hole since play was stopped because of lightning. Westwood pared the eighteenth hole to post an overall 19 under and hence win the inaugural Asian Tour event.
Along with the joy of winning, this triumph has awarded Westwood with a good amount of US $118,875. Had it not been for Luke Donald leading the Heritage tournament in America, Westwood would have easily been the Number one player after this victory. If Donald
is to maintain his lead throughout the final round, he will surpass both Kaymer and Westwood and become Number one.
