Lee Westwood wins the Nedbank Golf Challenge
World number one Lee Westwood held onto his title by winning the Nedbank Golf Challenge by eight shots. The challenge taking place at Sun City in South Africa had 12 amazing players teeing off against one another. The Englishman, leading the tournament from
the first day, gave an amazing performance and dazzled the audience at Sun City.
The 37 year old posted an amazing round with an equal best of the day with 68 and cashed in a total cheque of $1,250,000. His game throughout the tournament was an emblem of flawless golf and none of the other players were able to threaten Westy on the Gary
Player Country Club.
Westwood said before the final round that one should never rely on big leads and still perform their best during the final round. The charismatic player went into the final round with a five shot lead over second place Ross Fisher and Tim Clark.
Westwood said that it was most probably the birdie on the 2nd hole that established his momentum for the rest of the final round which thus led him to an amazing victory. More birdies on the 9th and 10th holes made him a
very strong player on the course where some players were trying hard to break par. The wind on the final day was somewhat of a hindrance during the final round of the end of the season invitational where even the last player on the field got a prize. The last
player this time was Louis Oosthuizen who received $250,000 for his twelfth place finish.
During his match winning play Westwood made a bogey on the 17th hole which was his fourth bogey of the week and didn’t affect his position greatly. However, Westwood overcame that little slip up by posting a birdie on the eighteenth hole and finishing
at 17-uder-271 over all. This being his first win at Sun City after his twelve attempts, he can now rest in peace since his number one title is safe.
Since former World number one Tiger woods was leading the Chevron World Challenge, Lee’s position was in jeopardy. Had Lee not finished in the top two and Tiger won his own event, Woods would regain his number one spot. Lucky for Lee, he can now enjoy his
Christmas as the world’s best golfer.
"I've been coming here for several years and it's a title I've always wanted to win. I've come close a few times, lost in a play-off to Ernie Els, but it's always been a very special target,” said Westwood.
