Lee Young Dae and Sung Hyun Ko win Men’s Doubles crown at the 2011 Canada Open Grand Prix
Experienced Korean shuttlers, Lee Young Dae and Sung Hyun Ko captured the Men’s Doubles crown after defeating Xiaolong Liu and Zihan Qiu in the final showdown of the 2011 Canada Open Grand Prix, in Richmond DC, Canada, on Sunday, July 24.
The Korean shuttlers, who were the fifth seeds in the draw, delivered a stunning performance against the sixth seeded pair of China in a straight-set final contest and won it by taking 42 minutes in the court. The Chinese duo completely failed to stop the
impressive run of the Koreans, who remained in a dominant position throughout the entire match.
The Koreans opened their campaign against the Chinese pair in an impressive manner, as they grabbed the attention of the huge crowd by playing aggressive badminton. Lee Young and Sung Hyun executed a planned game, as they kept the bird parallel to the net’s
height to keep their opponents in a defensive position. The Chinese shuttlers committed a few mistakes in the start, which kept them trailing behind at 8-11 until the interval.
After the break, the Korean pair continued their better play by dominating the game from all corners of the court. They played wonderful badminton at the net and created many opportunities to hit powerful jump smashes. Lee Young and Sung Hyun remained consistent
and progressed in the game by keeping a firm grip on the rallies and won it with a 21-18 margin in 22 minutes.
In the following set, Xiaolong and Zihan tried to play fast badminton in the starting points but failed to change proceedings, as their opponents were playing with an incredible control over the pace of the game. Until the break, the Koreans were in a three-point
lead of 11-8.
In the second part of the game, Lee Young and Sung Hyun continued their positive play by putting more speed in their strokes. They remained quite composed throughout the second set and won it with a difference of 21-16, in 20 minutes. The 42-minute final
match ended in straight games with a margin of 21-18 and 21-16.
