Leeds Carnegie get chance to avoid Aviva Premiership relegation – Rugby Union News
Teams have one more round to play before the Aviva Premierships 2010/11 plays-offs get kick started on May 14. While the teams are fighting for their place in the semi-finals of the Premiership during the weekends encounter, Leeds Carnegie and Newcastle
Falcons will be playing to retain their place in the Aviva Premiership.
Leeds Carnegie is currently placed at the bottom of the Aviva Premiership table with four wins out of 21 games with 22 points. Leeds place in Aviva Premiership is directly dependent upon their Falcons encounter during the weekend.
Leeds is just one point behind the Newcastle Falcons with 22 points. Falcons edged ahead of the Leeds courtesy of their closely contested game against Bath last weekend, which earned them a losing bonus point in the game.
Leeds needs at least two points from their weekend match provided the Falcons lose their weekend match against Bath. This will be Falcons second consecutive game against Bath in the Aviva Premiership. The match will be played at Recreation Ground, Bath on
Saturday, May 7.
Saints will host Leeds at Franklin's Gardens on Saturday, May 7. The best result for Leeds Carnegie is to win the game against the Saints that will take them to 26 points, two points ahead of the Falcons. However if Falcons defeat Bath then they will move
to 27 points putting an end to the Carnegie’s future in the Premiership.
However, if Bath defeat the Falcons, they will stay at 23 points and if Leeds secures a bonus point from the match even then the Falcons will retain their place in the premiership. The rules are that when two teams tie up with the same points the point difference
determines their rank and Leeds have a poor point difference and Falcons clearly edge ahead of Carnegie.
If Leeds manages to win a try bonus point and secure a losing bonus point from their weekend match with Bath defeating the Falcons, Leeds will be saved from Aviva relegation.
Leeds Carnegie legend Mike Shelley has predicted that the Falcons will lose their weekend clash and hinted that Leeds can earn required points from their weekend match against the Saints to save their place in next years Aviva Premiership.
