Leeds Rhinos’ Brian McDermott looking for Grand Final glory - Rugby League
While talking to reporters on Saturday, October 8, Leeds Rhinos’ coach, Brian McDermott, said that he wants Rhinos to finish off with a win at the Grand Final title decider at Old Trafford or he will consider his first season in charge a complete failure.
The coach was recalling his side’s Challenge Cup defeat against Wigan Warriors which was disappointing by all measures. Rhinos’ coach said, “We lost the Challenge Cup final and, should we not get the job done on Saturday, it will be regarded as a disappointing
season by me. We won't have won anything and I have a desire to win something as a coach. A few weeks after the season, you may look back from where we were to where we are now and take some pride from that, but I don't feel like saying that just yet. We have
got a job to do, one more game to go.”
McDermott was fire from Rhinos fans with their Super League play-offs in danger for the first time in history. The records revealed that the squad this year managed to win only ten of the total 21 clashes played. McDermott was the target this season because
he returned to Rhinos after serving in the same capacity at Harlequins.
However, the coach managed to pull his team out of bottom of the tables until the team had booked a spot on the final, which has rekindled their hope for a title for a fourth consecutive time in the last five years.
With this delayed surge from the Rhinos, they have created a new record of being the first team, outside the top berth to succeed in making a place in the Grand Final showdown.
The coach acknowledged that his team was devastated by their Challenge Cup loss but since then they have been continuously improving.
"Finishing fifth, we certainly had some work to do but we have never minded getting our hands dirty. That is why we find ourselves here."
