Leeds hooker Andy Titterell injures knee
Leeds Carnegie hooker Andy Titterell suffered a knee injury and will not feature for his side for at least the next few weeks.
The player suffered the injury during a routine training ground exercise on the run-up to Leeds’ LV= Cup match with Welsh side the Scarlets.
The Scarlets beat Leeds 52-13 on Saturday 6 November and Titterell was sorely missed in the game.
Leeds coach Neil Back could not confirm how long the injury would side-line the forward.
Speaking to BBC Radio Leeds, Back said, "We don't know the length of time he'll be out for just yet.”
The player will miss Leeds’ upcoming matches against Sale in the LV= Cup and a crucial match with Exeter in the Aviva Premier League.
Titterell has played well for Leeds so far this season when he has featured. Veteran Steve Thompson remains as the first choice hooker and he is currently away with England for the Autumn Internationals.
Titterell has been reliable with his line-out throws and has proved to be strong in the scrum so far this season.
The player was expected to provide cover for Thompson who will not return to Leeds until the end of November, and the English international may well have played four demanding Tests if he can stay in the England team.
This leaves Back with only Phil Nilsen as the one available hooker for Leeds.
Back admitted that the injury to Titterell could not have happened at a worse time for the club.
"It is a massive blow for Leeds. You do your best to avoid these training ground incidents but they happen."
The Leeds coach will look to Nilsen to play in the number two jersey until Thompson returns.
Leeds are rooted to the bottom of the league table and have only managed to pick up two points so far this season.
