Leesa Grundy, Abigail Rothery stand tall in Women’s Doubles tie of Ede Clendinnen Shield tournament
Tasmania’s Leesa Grundy-Abigail (Abbie) Rothery employed all of their brilliance and experience in the game to oust Victoria Wang-Melinda Sun in Ede Clendinnen Shield Sydney on August 28, 2012.
This hard fought battle was the second Women’s Doubles tie of a match between The Territories and Tasmania.
It kept both pairs head-to-head for 20 minutes before ending with a concluding result of 21-19 and 21-14.
The victorious shuttlers had to put an extra effort to seal this straight-set victory as their rivals were also in high spirits and they showed great fighting skills before bowing out.
Leesa and Abigail started the ball rolling straight away in the beginning as they pocketed first match point with distinction.
They launched a brisk attack and confined the opposing team to the rear court. Their technique was right from the coaching book as they kept a low profile in the start and then gradually increased their pace to leave the challengers far behind on points
table.
At mid-game break, they were in strong position with a mountainous total of 11 but a couple of unnecessary shots, which landed outside the court, cost them a few valuable points.
This demise provided the twosome of Victoria and Melinda a golden chance to bounce back into the contest. They did not squander this opportunity and caught their competitors in the third quarter of the set.
Next couple of rallies saw both teams striving hard to exceed each other but neither of them could gain a permanent lead.
Finally, this cliff-hanging game ended when Tasmania’s campaigners tipped the scale in their favour with 21-19 score on the board.
The second set of match was completely dominated by Leesa and Abigail as this time they did not repeat previous mistakes and maintained the upper hand all the way to game point situation.
They constantly kept on changing their tactics and did not allow their rivals to read their strategy. They enthralled them with some power packed strokes in the beginning and then magnified the impact with some impressive net play.
They maintained a notable advantage of seven points in the second half of the set and sealed their victory with 21-14 margin.
