  1. You must throw the punch from where you carry your hand.

Get your elbow up to generate force. Your forearm should be horizontal, pivot on the toes of  your left foot, and turn your shoulder.

My coach used to stand behind me and slap me in the head with a glove when I dropped my hands.

  2. you could always try with doing them close range first like with a heavy bag and in Shadow boxing when you shadow box you can see exaclty what you are doing wrong at least i can and with the heavy bag if you do them close enough you have to keep your hands up cuz if you pop the bag hard enough and you drop your hands you will get popped with it right back try it and let me know what you think

the guy above me is pretty good too try both let me know what you come with after two or three trainning sessions of this

  3. The first thing I would have you do is practice the technique at a very slow pace.  Drill, Drill, and Drill some more.  Keep doing it until you do it right.  Video tape it and then watch yourself.  Compare with those that use the correct technique throwing the punch.

There are things to correct even the worst habits.  I had a problem with my balance and getting my feet to wide apart so they tied rope between my feet to keep them at the proper space.  With throwing your left hook and dropping your hands - I assume you mean your right hand - you can tape it in place and get used to having on guard while you throw your hook.  Or stand there with a trainer, who will hit you with the punch mitt every time you make the mistake.  That is the best way to correct a bad habit!
