Left/Right audio from PS2 for Surround.?

Im pulling my hair out and have cables strung everywhere!

I just purchased a HD DVD player and I want to run my optical connection from it that originally was used for my PS2, but now when I connect the Red/White standard audio connections from the PS2 to my surround receiver Im only getting a faint sound from my satellite speakers but a true sound from my center and sub. Is this due bc of the fact they are a lower grade connection? I have tried switching all settings on the receiver ( Auto In, Opt In, Analog) and even the ProLogic I&II etc. but nothing works. Even stranger, the audio cables are only working on 1 component channel ????

I know I can solve it by just purchasing an optical splitter and another optical cable and run DVD/PS2 both into the receiver but this has me mind boggled. I was planning on this set up temporarly (but keep my PS2 surround sound) until I am able to purchase an HDTV and run the HDMI to the HD DVD.

  1. I would say it's a problem in the set-up. Your analog stereo cables (red/white) should work fine if you have your receiver set to convert stereo to surround.

Try setting your surround receiver for 5 channel stereo as a test, and if that works, you should be able to switch to some sort of simulated surround.

Also, check the PS3 for an analog/digital audio switch, either on the unit or in the menu. (I don't know the PS3)
