All day today my left eye has been seeing double, a ghost image down and slightly to the left of whatever I'm looking at. What could be causing this, and what can be done?

  1. I am assuming some things here.

    1.  You are covering your right eye when you see double, and that you have done so on previous days and not seen double.

    2.  You are wearing a correct prescription or don't need to wear glasses.

Some people interpret the blur caused by being out of focus as "double vision".  You may be out of focus and need a prescription lens to correct your vision.

If this is a first time event for you and exists when the right eye is covered, then I suspect that something is going on inside your left eye.  A small leakage of fluid into the retina can cause what you describe.

If your double vision only occurs when both eyes are open, then you absolutely MUST get to a doctor now.

  2. i am 21  just had the same problem i went to the doctors and they said tho im young it could have been caused by a mini stroke and they sent me for tests so def go to the doctors or er for that asap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111

  3. If it's definitely new it needs checking, fairly promptly but not as an emergency.

Something has produced an optical irregularity.

The two most likely locations for this are the cornea:

corneal ulcer, embedded foreign body (they don't have to be painful, though most are) and other possibilities.

Or the retina near the macula, where the most likely cause in a young person would be a central serous maculopathy, though again there are other possibilities.

It can be as simple as a cyst on the upper eyelid pressing on and slightly distorting the cornea, temporarily.

But it'll take an exam to track down the cause.
