Question:

Left pupil became very dilated, problem?

Last night, my left pupil became very dilated for about 8 or 9 hours. It was so dilated that it was almost taking over my entire eye (only black in the middle). My right pupil stayed normal, actually looked very small.

I have a blood clotting disorder (Factor V Leiden) so it worried me a bit, and I went to the hospital. However, I waited way too long for hours and hours and left.

This morning, my pupil seems to have returned to normal. It may be a LITTLE big but nothing even really noticeable.

I was cleaning a oven at work yesterday, on self clean mode which made a disgusting scent and made me feel sick and get a headache. Maybe this caused it?

Could this be serious, or because it went away am I ok?

  1. Yagman has a very valid explanation or it could be Adie's pupil...see:

and see your eye doctor if it persists.

  2. It is likely that you got some type of chemical into the eye that had either parasympatholyic or sympathomimetic properties.  Any chemical with these properties can dilate the eye if it comes in contact with the eye even though it is not designed to do so.  There are also insecticides that have dilating capabilities.  If indeed this is what caused the dilation ( and I suspect it is) then you should be fine.

It would be best to see an eye doctor to be sure but the transient nature of the dilation is a plus.
