I have had a dose of the flu now for about a week, but over the last couple of days, this swelling has developed firstly in my mouth bringing with it some mouth ulcers then it seemed to extend down my neck until I now have both all puffed up and it is affecting my hearing in the left ear, is it anything I should be bothering the doctor with or should I just tough it out with a packet of Paracetamol?

  1. Could be either glandular swelling or something wrong with the Eustachian tube or indeed an abscess

  2. I am no doctor but when I get a bad case of the flu or severe sinus allergies this happens. The sinus drainage causes the glands to swell and in your case, like with me, one side only (think of how you sleep, which side).  What I do is gargle with salt water and use mouthwash. This kills the bacteria and reduces the chances for an infection. The ears plugging is normal with the gland swelling. What I would suggest is to try tylenol severe sinus allergy pills, they are green and yellow. I swear by these because if it is the flu or an allergy, this medication takes care of 100% of the discomforts. A doctor would just tell you to sweat it out, and if it is still like this in a couple days - then come in. The most they can do is give you antibiotics at that time because allergies and flu has no cures... let me know if this helps you.

  3. I would call your doctor.

  4. Have you considered that it may have nothing to do with the flu but maybe be a bad tooth.  I would pursue that avenue if I were you. Another maybe would be parotiditis.  In either case, have it checked out by the doctor. Best of luck.
