when doing a leg yeild with my horse, he sometimes drop te outside shoulder..

so, if were yeilding to the right, he drops his left shoulder, and i dont think he should be....

so do i use leg, rein, or a combination to do this?is it because i don't have enough foreward implusion?

i just can't figure it out!

p.s-i won't see my trainer before my next ride, so i want to figure this out now... i would ask her otherwise.

thanks!

  1. Are you riding in a straight line or a circle when you leg yield?

Use more inside leg slightly forward of girth.

  2. Try keeping his neck straight.

I have the same problem. I ride a tall, and long, TB, so its easier for him to get out of work by dropping the shoulder.

Hold your oustide elbow to your side to stabalize the rein and keep him straight.

Try to stay as straight as possible if your doing it on a circle.

Edit: Make sure your using enough indirect rein. And when using your leg for pushing him out, keep it on the girth. With your other leg, only move it 'slightly' back. I find it makes it easier for the horse to understand. Make sure to sit deeper on your inside seat. Keep him going at a good, marching pace so he can't stop and drop his shoulder.

If he isn't listening, talk to him with whips or spurs. I prefer to use a whip. Simply tap him when you use your inside leg to help him understand. Make sure to use the whip behind your leg.

And I agree, this is very confusing! I think doing haunches in/out, shoulder in/out, and leg yielding is some of the hardest parts of Dressage, especially for a go go go TB.
