Hi I looking to learn to play guitar and I've found a place with a sale on selling the Legacy D30 6 String Acoustic for £59 new un opened in it's box.

Is this a good deal? I'm going to the store on Saturday so would love some advice asap!

Thanks

Paul

  1. 59 pounds is pretty inexpensive for a guitar (less than US $200), but keep in mind that if the guitar is new and still in the unopened box, you'll have to get it set up by a guitar repair person in order for it to play well.

A reputable music store takes all of their instruments out of the shipping boxes and sets them up (adjust the truss rod , lower the action, put decent strings on it, etc) before putting them out on the sales floor. If the store you're going to is a music store, make sure they set the guitar up for you for free as part of the price.  If you're buying the guitar from a department store or discount store like Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Target, etc -- they won't have anyone on staff who knows how to do that, and then you'll have to take the guitar to a music store and pay someone to do that.

You should still take a good look at the guitar, make sure its comfortable for you to hold, and (most importantly) make sure you like the sound, before you decide to buy it.  And while you're there, look at a bunch of other guitars in the same price range or a bit higher, for comparison purposes.  Don't just buy the first guitar you try out.

And if you have a friend who plays guitar, bring him or her with you to the music store to help you evaluate the instruments. Get them to play each of the guitars you're considering, while you listen with your back turned.  The one that sounds best to you is the one you want.

  2. You won't know until you see it and play it. If the strings are too hard to press cleanly to the fretboard, then no, it's not a good deal. Your best bet would be to take someone along who knows something about guitars. That's a pretty low price, so I wouldn't expect much.

    Good luck!
