So I started working for this painting company, it was agreed that I was going to be paid 9 dollars an hour. After my first pay check I did the math and I was only getting paid 8 dollars before any deductions.What can I do about this?

yes, the first place you should go is to the person who promised you the $9. I might start out with something like "remember the conversation we had about my wages?  I recall, it was $9 per hour. My paycheck this week gives me only $8 an hour. I'm sure there is an error. Will you be cutting a check this week or can I expect it in next week's check?" Do it right away.

Next time, try to get everything in writing.

Go to the boss and say "I thought we agreed I was going to be paid $9 an hour. Why are you only paying me $8?"
